Orchid Girls is a dystopian novel by the bestselling author of If I Stay, set in a world rebuilt after a cataclysm on the principle that everyone has a designated place and purpose. The protagonist, Miri, is an “Orchid Girl” — beautiful, honored, and chosen — until she graduates from the Cloister and discovers that her role is not one of honor but of transaction: her body and existence are meant to serve the powerful men holding the broken world together. Using the skills of observation and performance she was trained in, Miri turns those tools into something her masters never anticipated: strategy and resistance.

Our goal with this trailer was to not only generate immediate awareness, but excitement, among Gayle Forman’s existing fans and broader YA/dystopian fiction lovers. With such a short video, we knew we needed to quickly and clearly communicate the book’s core premise (a haunting, resistance-driven dystopia,) visually introduce the new cover and world of the novel, and drive traffic to the Kickstarter campaign page.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The primary target audience for the trailer are current fans of Gayle Forman’s novels (especially readers of her emotionally intense, character-driven YA and contemporary fiction); readers of dystopian and speculative YA who enjoy titles with strong female leads and themes of resistance; and bookish crowdfunding supporters who are motivated by innovative publishing models, author-direct campaigns, and exclusive backer rewards.

Secondary audiences include book clubs, librarians, educators, and booksellers who track high-profile author projects and Kickstarter book launches.

HOW WE MADE IT HAPPEN

We opted for a 3D animated approach for this trailer — to truly bring the world of Orchid Girls to life with visual realism, and highlight the book’s unique slipcover design. Simple, yet striking, the rousing sound design and end card motion graphics tie everything together in this RDV Media produced cover reveal and announcement trailer.
